At least 13 passengers perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
