Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
