The English along with Welsh Drawn Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The group draw was conducted by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major early clash in Australia. They are joined in Group F by Tonga and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Other Notable Pool Pairings

The Irish and the Scots also share a group together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a convincing win, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture aimed at launch the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, future hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will face Fiji, Los Leones and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in 2023.

This edition will introduce a last-16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's heavyweights early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Pool B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the pool stages.
