The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
