Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but inside Together exists a profound examination about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
